I haven't been there for quite a while, but they've invested money in the area and modernised it. A sculpture which won the coveted Turner prize was moved from London to a gallery on the Tyne, and attracts double the amount of visitors than when it was housed in the capital.

Get Carter, starring Michael Caine was set and filmed there, and some of the football greats've played for Newcastle, as well as top manager Sir Bobby Robson being a lifelong fan.

Newcastle's famous for quite a few things - their Newcastle Brown Ale, the Millennium Bridge (the first of its sort to tilt, to allow boats to pass underneath), and last but not least, the man who found and produced Jimmi Hendrix, (Chas Chandler) was a Geordie, and it was he who brought the man back to Newcastle, where people saw him busking on the streets.
