When I got back to school, the new program is Word 2007 (quite different) - is that Vista?

Word 2007 is Microsoft's version of an open source word processor. It seems that some government agencies are demanding that instead of the proprietary stuff Microsoft usually sells. The problem with Word 2007 is that it is not backward compatible with earlier versions of Word because the open source coding is a much different approach. You can download a translator from Microsoft that will work only with Microsoft products.

Or, you can just use the original Open Office free office suite http://www.openoffice.org/
This product is compatible with all versions of Microsoft products without the need for a translator. Then again, why pay for Microsoft's software when Open Office is free?

Absolutely! That's the only thing I use now, and it's absolutely the equivalent of MS Office, but even better, 'cause it's free!! Just download it and install it. It has all the components of MS Office, like the word processor, database, spreadsheet, etc., and is compatible with MSO. You can save the various files in MSO format, and those with MSO can load and read them (with a few esoteric features not yet included, but unless you're doing major corporate presentations, you probably won't run across any problems).

You can get the latest version here: http://www.openoffice.org/

I found an interesting article that compares MS Word 2007 with the free Open Office equivalent. It's an interesting read and might answer a lot of the questions out there regarding the two.
