Why Women Wear Bras

Postby Yogi » 23 Nov 2011, 16:05

Because something bad will happen to your breasts if you don't ???
That's the reason I hear most often, but ...
This is largely a myth: "...wearing a bra... has no medical necessity whatsoever", says Susan M. Love, M.D in her "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book". This is similar to the myth that women supposedly need corsets to support their stomach muscles.

If you wear a bra that's of the right fit/size, breasts WON'T sag as much as if you go without one. Some have built-in support bands underneath them, which are better than the wired type and shouldn't leave marks or indentations on the skin. they can also help with posture and shape.

I totally disagree that it's a myth regarding corsets, though. In my great-grandma's day, after she'd given birth, she had a towel pinned round her stomach for so long, which helped to control the lax muscles. This was advised by her doctor, and a good few children later, photos show her to've been slim and shapely. The same with my mum, who was pregnant 8 times but who gave birth to 6 full-term children. She said that she wore a panti girdle after having her babies, and then as she exercised naturally, she lost the flabby bits.

Wearing control garments is, for many women, a common practice, so that their clothes look better. Meanwhile, their stomach muscles are supported and held in. It doesn't cure the problem of having a fat stomach, but when a woman chooses to wear these garments all the time, she knows it's time to diet and exercise - or not, depending on how she feels about herself.

A woman with fat around her stomach, will often prefer to be held in, rather than walk around holding the muscles in all the time. That'd be the best way to strengthen them, but for very many, wearing a good control garment does the job for them, and it's a definite "need".

I think the article simply is stating that there is frequently no medical reason to wear a bra. The support qualities of a bra and/or girdle are obvious and not part of the myth. I've heard different stories from different women regarding the benefits of wearing a bra. The big worry seems to be sagging boobs. Some say it is a real problem and others say it's not. I'm thinking it has a lot to do with how you define the problem.

To most women, sagging IS a problem. Breast feeding can do it, losing weight can do it, getting older can do it. Some aren't bothered, and leave things to nature, but myself and my friends believe that a well-supporting bra helps to maintain shape and firmness.

At the end of the day, women need to exercise their pectoral muscles. If you don't work on it, then like anywhere else, the muscles'll go flabby eventually.

I'm sure there are good medically sound reasons to wear them, as well. If engaged in a vigorous exercise program, I'm sure it might be painful and injurious both to the back and to "the boys" themselves, having them flapping about freely. Of course, "overly large" ones can work on the back without any special exertion.

Not that I've had any personal experience with such, mind you! I've just been told.

Grin.

It's true that the more voluptuous women'd find going without their bras might be a relief in some respects, but could be painful when exercising, and if you let everything hang free - hang they will.

looking at this picture, i have to disagree with the learned doctor:

[ img ]

those ladies have not even seen a bra, and theirs have all gone south, except for the one...

another thing: not common knowledge [what a surprise], but apparently most women end up with their stomach muscles torn during pregnancy and since they're just being "lazy" and nor exercising enough, they end up with a belly apron.

Having babies doesn't necessarily cause drooping. My mum's had 6 of us, and she's still got a nice figure, but if you're "well rounded" to begin with, well you need to pay a bit of attention to yourself.

Awww!!!! Be proud of your war wounds!!

Well no one believes me when I say I haven't got any stretch marks, but I haven't. I was enormous when I was pregnant, but it just went again afterwards. Mind you, I was extremely active once I came home from hospital. The day we brought our eldest home, I was cooking a full dinner within 20 minutes of stepping into the kitchen, while the Oh was coo'ing over his new son! :bleh: I didn't even get a cup of tea until much later on.
