my favourite: howie mandel was on dog whisperer and cesar told him the rules of how to approach a dog respectfully.

"no touch, no talk, no eye contact"

howie gapes and says "how do you think i managed to stay married for 30 years?"

I honestly don't know how/why couples get into this pattern of taking each other for granted, or arguing over stupid little things. Me and my husband've always communicated well, but he IS a sulker. I basically ignore it, because he also has to put up with things from me which he may not like, but we accept that this happens.

Our lives aren't split 50-50. He does far more work than I do, but I show my appreciation by what I do for him and how I talk to him. He's still romantic and brings flowers in for me and other little gifts. He surprises me by taking me out to nice places, and I make time for US, as a couple, and make sure that he comes home to a good atmosphere.

Over dinner, we talk about our day, make plans, whatever - and then both of us give each other some space.
I love him, and he loves me. Maybe that's the whole crux of the matter, I don't know, but he'd never belittle me or treat me badly. In return, I respect him for how he is, and am always there for him.

Add to that the fact that we laugh together a lot, and that about sums it up.

then there are my sister and my grandmother...

ye gods, the bickering, the sniping, the attitude!!! grandma lived with her husband for maybe 30 yrs [huh? i don't actually know...] after i was born, the villagers decided it was not proper for them to live 'in sin', so they got gramps drunk, and he woke up married. he then built [badly] grandma a wee cottage and they lived there for some 20 + yrs. they always argued about some silly thing. then he'd go out and into the sty and discuss the matter with the one-eared pig.

my sister is married to the love of her life. all they do, all the long day long, is natter about something i cannot fathom: "last tueday when we going to the store..." "it wasn't tuesday! it was monday!" "no! it was tuesday, for monday we watched helga on the telly!" "that wasn't..."

i'm sitting there  like WHO CARES? are you guys DAFT?

ah, but they're still married. and i'm not and never again will be...

so, i guess it's each their own and whatever might work one, is poison to the next?

Some couples enjoy idle chit-chat together, some'd find it boring. Luckily me and my husband work together, so there's always a myriad of things to discuss and the conversation just flows. I was always conscious not to discuss how many times I'd changed the babies nappies though, or how many times they'd thrown milk back up on me. That sort of talk's more fitting between women.

The same goes for if I nip to buy something. I don't come back and discuss the contents of the fruit box or whatever - but some people would.

Our arguments are just differences of opinion which never carry on for days like they do with some couples, and I couldn't live with a man who yelled at me all the time, or deliberately blanked me or cleared off with his pals every night. We respect each other enough to give each other space, but enjoy (most) of our time together.
