parenting tip from toula:

Post by pilvikki »

The joys of parenthood
Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children.
After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was "DON'T!"
"Don't what?" Adam replied.
"Don't eat the forbidden fruit", God said.
"Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve! We have forbidden fruit!!!!!"
" No Way !"
"Yes way!"
"Do NOT eat the fruit!" said God.
"Why?"
"Because I am your Father and I said so!" God replied, wondering why He hadn't stopped creation after making the elephants.
A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked! "Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?" God asked.
"Uh huh", Adam replied.
"Then why did you?" said the Father.
"I don't know", said Eve.
"She started it!" Adam said.
"Did not!"
"Did too!"
"DID NOT!"
Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.
But there is reassurance in the story! If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it, don't be hard on yourself. If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

Yours are to come pink. It's not all plain sailing so I hear, but the benefits outweigh the bad. I truly love our boys to bits.

I should think so - but not all parents do. Some may be proud of them underneath, but lack the warmth to tell them how much they're loved.

I guess some parents were never shown love as children themselves and often lack the capacity to show it to their own children.

Absolutely. If a child's ignored or not shown warmth and love, how can they pass it on to their own? It doesn't always come easily to some folk, because they've had no one to set a good example.

Indded the sad part iss that the ill effects of parenting generlly pass from generation to generation

I would imagine that to be the general case, yes.

The sad part is it can take years even generations to break the cycle that a family can leave as its legacy.

You're right. If someone grows up feeling unloved, they often grow into miserable, resentful adults, and this's picked up by their children, who carry not ony the burden of not being shown any love themselves, but sometimes the onus of was it somehow their fault.
On the flip side, I went to school with a girl who was never shown much love by her parents, and she vowed that if she ever had kids of her own, she'd be the complete opposite. True to her word, she was. She's still a friend of mine, and she's a lovely warm mum.
