Peas glorious peas...

Do you like the mushy variety, Pinky?

Surely there's nothing akin to fish, chips and mushy peas...

that is such an English dish NM, we Irish are not akin to such muck !! Peas are not as popular here as they are in the UK. Pinky reckons we are more refined in our tastes

When I was a kid I would only eat baked beans with my fish and chips - I didn't do peas back then.

I just started eating healthier foods and grew to like them, Pinky. I never hated peas in the first place, I just opted for beans instead.

Ooh... just a thought.... Adzuki beans, which are available from health shops in their raw state, or in tins beside the kidney beans in supermarkets, are one of the most fantastic beans you can eat. They are similar in texture and colour to kidney beans, but are much smaller. They are far lower in carbs and higher in fibre, and have been hailed as a fabulous weightloss and detox bean for their ability to act like a sponge and soak up fat and other rubbish and carry them out of the body. Wonder whether they could help reduce cholesterol too?

Gillian McKeith declared them the king of the beans. :cool2: I love them.

I have never cared for baked beans all that much. But I came to love other pulses when I worked in an Indian veggie cafe. I love Flageolet beans.....black-eyed peas.....baby broad beans,...and my favorite is chick peas (garbanzos). I also love to whip up a quick red lentil dhal. At the veggie cafe, I learned how to make 'kitcheree'....the mung dhal and rice dish that kedgeree is based on...not a bit of smoked haddock in sight.

Wow, that sounds delicious. I'm not a fan of smoked haddock so that sounds like a superb alternative. I do make a lovely tomato and lentil dhal and sometimes I pair that with a wild mushroom risotto for the differing flavours and textures. I've got both recipes in my detox cookbook.

Kitcheree is considered real comfort food. I just googled it...out of curiosity...and it is a mainstay of Ayurvedic cooking, and seems to be also used as a basis for detox. I adore it....I want to make it now!!

It's just a recipe book but full of recipes that are suitable for a detox diet - i.e. no wheat, dairy, gluten, meat, fish, etc. It's also got a good chapter full of juice recipes to kick start the cleansing process. I've made a few of the recipes in there, and I have to say they are delicious.

An example:

Put 1 punnet of raspberries into a small saucepan with 1 tbsp of hazelnut oil and tbsps set honey. Place over the lowest heat possible and leave until the raspberries have broken down. Push the whole mixture through a sieve until you have extracted the maximum amount of liquid (including the thick syrup) and then discard the seeds. You can pour the sauce over hulled strawberries for a delicious sin-free dessert.

We shall fight on the seas and oceans,
We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
We shall fight on the beaches,
We shall fight on the landing grounds,
We shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
We shall fight in the hills;
We shall never surrender!
