lucy's bone.

Postby pilvikki » 14 Jun 2014, 18:27

poor pup got a piece of bone stuck between her back molars. it was driving her crazy, she was foaming at the mouth and rubbing her face in the floor.

that turned into saga, of course.

vet's closed so we tried and tried to dislodge it, but no way, it would actually wiggle, but lucy could not keep still long enough.

around midnight I remembered Lucy's valiums from a couple of years ago, so I dug them up and we figured how much she needed. we miscalculated as I thought it better to err on the lighter side. still, by 2 she appeared pretty relaxed.

try again. she actually opened her mouth for me!

and we failed...

no way could we get a proper grip on it and had no tools handy either.

we decided we had to wait until morning and haul her off to the vet.

around 3 thought she'd like company and started off up the stairs. good grief! she was stoned and kept sliding. finally got up with punkin's help. lucy staggered into punkin's room and after she'd gone back to bed, punkin realized she needed to block her doorway in case lucy tried to go downstairs. get up again....

we got lucy to the vet who dug around, grumbled about maybe having to anesthetize her. but he grabbed a pair of pliers, handed punkin a pair of disposable gloves, got to work and "YAY!" - out it came.

Awww, I'm so pleased. It must've been really uncomfortable for her, poor girl.

The dosage of valium, or Diazepam for dogs's as follows: "The typical lower end Valium dosage for dogs is 0.25 mg per pound administered once every 24 hours. So if you have a 60 pound dog, the correct dosage would be 15 mg of Valium. The dosage administered can reach up to 1 mg per pound at maximum."

I bet she feels much better now, but it's so easy for animals to get bits of bone and other objects lodged between their teeth.

Awww!! I'm sure she'll be OK, and I hope 2 of mine will be as well. Went to the vet's today, and it appears that they've both contracted a urine infection. Just hope it's no more than that.

With the best will in the world, I think they can all have their naughty moments. Our girls're really pretty good at doing what they're told, but the "baby" .... well she has a mind of her own sometimes. : (
