i don't like the lid down myself; it's at such awkward height that i'd snapped something in by back raising it.

 I've thought about that myself, with the automatic slow release of either seat OR lid.

we had that in canada, but gave up on it as for a while we were an all-female-user household.

I put the lids down at night because cold actually comes up from the U bends. It's the same as keeping plugs in sinks and baths - supposed to conserve a a bit of heat - but no good if you suddenly get a leaky tap! : )

it's supposed to be a closed system on the toilet, for if air actually comes up through the bend, you'll have sewer gas escape as well. and if you do, you'll know it!

as for the sinks, they do have the overflow holes, yes? but same deal, there has to be a water loch in the traps or you're house would stink like a septic tank!
