Happens all the time, just ask O.J. Simpson.

The only people i'd bring back the death penalty for are child rapist/killers. Other than that the death penalty is a waste of time. It's a knee jerk reaction and will never be a deterrent.

Show me one! I don't believe it stops it altogether, but it stops the ones who get executed!

Of course they do. It'd never stop all the murders, although I believe it WOULD act as a deterrent to some, but it'd certainly put a stop to the serial and child murderers that'd be caught.

well it seems some of these countries have more child murderes than we have in Ireland without the death penalty so it doesnt seem to be the panacea to crime

That's because Ireland - and the UK are much smaller, so have less population and therefore less murderers, than say, a big place like the US. I'm not saying that the death penalty'd stop it all. It wouldn't - but it'd get rid of some of them, and make a few others think twice if they knew what was to come.

but still doesnt account for the high crime rates in countries with the death penalty doesnt seem to be a sufficient deterrent in my view.

HUn, large populations are bound to yield a higher rate of criminals, than places where the populations are smaller. Folk addled on drugs, for instance, maybe have no or little recollection of their crimes after committing them. Some people simply kill for money to buy their next fix. If they were slung into jail and left to go cold turkey, I think the knowledge of what could happen to them'd be a very sobering thought. However, they HAVE committed a terrible crime, and I don't believe in messing about with these people.
For the ones that kill indiscriminately, or murder children, I have no sympathy at all. They MIGHT have their mental problems or have criminal minds which're satiated by murdering someone, but I'm not interested in those excuses. Some folk ENJOY killing. I don't think they should be allowed to live, end of. Why should the tax payer pay to let them out and "return some good" to the neighbourhood? At the very least, I believe they should be caged up, with no chance of ever being freed.

I won't argue with your opinion hun, because that's fair enough, but if your own child was murdered, I wonder if you'd think in the same way? These people are scum, and cowards. They pick on innocent defenceless youngsters. I'd go down myself if anyone hurt one of mine, but I'd make sure that the man couldn't harm anyone else.

No, it'd never bring your child back, but at least, in my case, it'd make the pain more bearable, knowing that the killer couldn't hurt anyone else.

It'll never be a deterrent, but as Ice says it would get rid of certain individuals. But unfortunately with human nature once you get rid of one two more would pop up. :(

I can't envisage when this sort of thing might be stopped, but man's the cruelest animal on the planet anyway, so no, unless something radical's done, then killings'll always go on - and perhaps would anyway. Fair enough - if someone wants to murder, knowing the consequences, then I'd say bring back the death penalty and get on with it. the more we put out of harm's way, the better.

I can't see the point - any point - in keeping them alive. They cost the tax payer a fortune, and deserve to have done to them what they did to others. You said yourself that prison's not working.
