Wal-Mart: same-sex partners to get health benefits

Postby AJRC » 28 Aug 2013, 02:21

Wal-Mart, the largest private sector US employer, is to offer health insurance to the same-sex partners of its staff.

You have to laugh at the loonies, they're saying they'll now boycott Wal-Mart because of this. They've loved Wal-Mart all these years and now the far right talk forums are going into loony overdrive. Wal-Mart is a business, it has to change to compete. Do the loonies think a business should stay the same just because of them?

Heaven only knows *what* the goofs on the far right think, since there aren't any of them left here on this site. I, personally, refuse to shop at Wal-Mart because their business practices promote slave labor and because they have a complete lack of concern for the safety of the workers in their associated sweatshops overseas. The fact that they've seen fit to treat a small portion of their employees here at home as human beings is encouraging, but still not enough so to make me feel as though I want to shop in any of their stores.

from what i've heard, their insurance is pretty useless anyway... but it's interesting to see that they're doing something like that, which seems contradictory to their overall impression.

Your last sentence nailed it on the head, Pilvikki.

Strange that the powers-that-be in Walmart would make and implement this policy, knowing it would antagonize thousands of people.

The truth is that WalMart does not own and operate sweat shops in any country. Admittedly, the countries from which WalMart purchases goods have different work ethics than we do in America. Basically those countries do not have factories that are dominated by labor unions and the fat cats that run them, plus the work force does not need to live by the highest standards on earth. This situation, quite naturally, is a threat to what is left to the unions in the Western world, and thus you see a lot of WalMart bashing going around.

WalMart buys the best available goods at the lowest possible price. They buy in huge lots and have a distribution network that is the envy of any large corporation. The stores are operated on the same principle, i.e., to get the most productivity from their employees for the least amount of cost. No, WalMart employees do not get the same benefits as a professional health care provider, for example, but WalMart hires anyone who is willing to fill out an application and give an honest days effort. The bottom line here is that WalMart employs people that no other big corporation will.

There are benefits to the consumer as a consequence of WalMart's being frugal. Their prices are hard to beat. The merchandise is not high end and of exceptional quality, but it is good quality and affordable to people trying to survive in a struggling economy. Is WalMart doing something wrong by cutting their costs and offering affordable consumer goods? If you judge by revenue alone, they have the largest success rate of all corporations. Walmart is succeeding better than all the world's major oil companies, automobile manufacturers, and even Warren Buffet, by wide margins. Second place Exxon makes more profit from their revenues, but that business is way less labor intensive and thus less costly to operate.

Say what you will about their business practices, but WalMart customers choose to support what they are doing. It's not like there is no other store in town. The choice difference is due to those other shops being inefficient and dominated by labor unions, resulting in higher costs to the consumer.

None here, but a quick visit to wizbangblog.com or Breitbart.com will inform you that the loonies are still as loony as ever.

It's just heart warming to watch them go ballistic over something so trivial.
