Not savage at all! Only their owners make them like that by mistreating them. Our Staffies've been superbly gentle, and big teeth or not, I can put my hand inside their mouths and play tug of war with them. Any extra pressure that they've accidentally exerted only needed a: "NO ..." and they'd release their grip immediately.

They're beautiful, family-friendly dogs. They love human beings, but like any dog, they need to be treated with respect and to know who's the boss. That doesn't mean shouting orders at them. They're easily trained by awarding kind words when they behave, and they love a lot of fuss.

I've always trained my mutts to accept it that when I want to dig out that old chicken bone out of her mouth, she, or he, better let me have it. now.

and yes, it'll be slimy and gross but I've never been bitten. not even close.

to me that pretty well shows the dog's temperament.

Couldn't agree more. Our girls were like that as well. You could retrieve toys or food, and they wouldn't bite at all. I don't know about dislodging a bone. I think we had to do that once, or it was something similar, but again, so biting or snarling. When an animal trusts you, they give you the respect that you give to them. Our two remaining dogs, both male, are just as placid and lovable.
