Debate

Postby Ice.Maiden » 07 Aug 2011, 17:52

I came across an interesting question that made me wonder. Is language necessary for thought?

If so, do animals think, in response to their own "language" - or do they just act on impulse?

My take? language is not neccisary for thought. We may use words for thinking, but we also use sights, smells and feelings. And animals can't soley act on impulse - they have a learning curve. Learning bespeak of thoughts and reasoning, what works and what don't.

My mother has a stance that really just stops time. No matter what she wants then it is hers, if it is fish singing the national anthem or birds barking, doesn't matter. She gets it.

LOL!!! That's a nice expression! I'm going to adopt it!

Would you say your mother's formidable Silke?? :P

Mine used to give us a look that "said it all", but I think she's just given up now!

Somehow I think most people have that kind of relationship to their own parents though. Everyone can be intimidating for someone at a young age, and you get to see your parents do it more than most. I think it just sticks around.

Yes, that's true. Mind you, my mum usually wore a kindly, smiling expression. It's just when we "misbehaved" that it changed quickly! : )
