If the world, the whole world, were to actually end there wouldn't be anyone around to say, "See? I told you so!" so what is the contest? If it ends - we're gone and won't care. If it doesn't then the Mayans got bored and went on to other things. Now, if the calendar companies stopped making calendars for 2013, I might wonder a bit. But, it's not like we could do anything about it it anyway.

I like the idea of a world ending its misbegotten ways and entering an age of peace and enlightenment. I don't think that will happen either. :sigh:

It's all a Conspiracy!!

(Of course, that's just a theory.)

I'm with Ladypatg on this one. If something does happen, there won't be a damn thing we can do about it, and if it's an "ultimate" catastrophe, there won't be very many people (if any) left to say "I told you so." I think those would be very busy with things other than pointing the haughty finger of mitigation into the air.

I'm not at all planning to be one of those few...I seriously wouldn't want to be. Wouldn't that be a wonderful life, Hooch? Most of the SF novels I've read on the subject paint a bleak picture of life after such an event. It's a life I just would no longer be capable of maintaining.

Imagine the very first thing survivors would have to do...

BRING ME YOUR DEAD! BRING ME YOUR DEAD!

Naw...not for yours truly.

(I wonder what the hourly rate would be for collecting the dead?)

"Speculation is futile...you will be assimilated."

well, glenn, last time they most got the plague from collecting the dead... not a profitable, nor a generally long-term position in corpse collection.

unless we turn to soilent green, of course. i'd love to have seen my face when it dawned on me what it was...

i have no doubt about humanity's once more taking a leap off the diving board - only to find an empty pool beneath. as a whole we're just not that smart...

:P

I'm not just being hopeful. or ignoring the fact that we're destroying the world around us by our own greed and stupidity, but there are many people trying to reverse the affects of what we've done, and who 're trying to stop further damage.

Therefore, although we, as humans, might be on the brink of extinction because "we're" too foolish to see what lies ahead, I think there WILL be those who survive a catastrophe, and I don't believe that the world's going to end in December or any time soon.

If and when that time arrives, our descendents'll have colonised new planets, and this is why we need to keep history going, so that generations many years down the line'll hopefully be able to learn from our folly.

Not sure if it's possible for humanity as a whole to learn from it's mistakes, but a minority of people would certainly survive and take humanity into a better age.

One good thing about the end of the world in Dec, you won't have to buy anyone a xmas present. ;)

Aww, you'd find something else. Apparently there are some mosses which can be turned into beer. Bet some of that grows inside caves! : )

That would explain some of those moldy-tasting beers I've had.

Chsssss, chsssss, chsssss!

And, Vikks, well of course it was news-like. Very important you see. Did you see what it said near the bottom?

"Protective bunkers are being built across the globe – just in case there is a fierce battle with the alien spaceships. WWN has learned that the bunkers in the United States are being built in Nebraska, Alaska and somewhere in New Jersey."

Just goes to show you that aliens might be the reason for our demise! : )
