Cutting Onions Without Tears

Postby Yogi » 11 Nov 2009, 09:54

This is the craziest thing I ever heard of, but it works. Simply put your tongue on the roof of your mouth while cutting onions. Breath through your mouth, not your nose while cutting. I was amazed at how well this works.

i keep my onions in the fridge - works a treat and no problem with weepy eyes.

they're the strong yellow cooking onions, too, so it's not just a matter of picking low-acid varieties.

apparantly a lighted candle next to where you are chopping absorbs the fumes of the onions too so therefore your eyes stay tearfree.

Never used frozen ones.

Best way I've found is to cut the onion under running water, and leave the root alone where the chemical's more concentrated. Then put the chopped pieces into a bowl of water until ready to cook.

I too use diced frozen...from Sainsbury's. They work a treat, and as single person I find them perfect. Better than wondering if the onions I bought a week ago have started sprouting.

now, i either get my father to do it for me (they don't bother him in the least) or buy the already chopped in containers.

These are special glasses for cutting onions - they keep the noxious fumes out of your eyes:

The spoon in the mouth does work, but often I chop onions with no tears at all. But the Spanish onions are milder anyway.
