the mole wars

Postby mamie » 14 Jun 2009, 15:49

For many years we have been plagued with furry little moles that live in our lawn in the spring and tunnel about leaving piles of dirt and generally making a mess. It must be a tough way to make a living but they usually taper off with the tunneling after the grass roots get too thick.

This year was no exception and Arthur has been out there doing battle yet again, bringing in loam and trying to stomp it down the holes and level the ground.

Well, on Friday we had an unusual rain storm where it rained one or two inches an hour most of the day.

On Saturday it had stopped raining just long enough to mow the grass - Arthur kept hearing thunking noises as he mowed and finally realized he was mowing through a field of dead, drowned moles. They either can't swim or were trapped beneath ground.

Next year we'll know what to do when we find the little holes - pass the hose, please!

I've also heard that the moles are primarily after grubs that live in the ground under your grass. Spread some grub killer in your yard, kill the grubs, and the moles stay away (no food).

Would that they could do that "Community Service" without building their condominiums in the process! :bleh:

Hey, you've applied for a position in the Government. All you have to say is "Permit Denied!"
