honestly, do not celebrate it.

pick what you want to do and do that. stop buying presents and spending money on people you don't see or care about. stop spending time on things that are for once a year.

i don't celebrate. i buy a few thoughtful gifts for a few people. i don't decorate and i absolutely do not ever feel one smidge of guilt. i don't expect anyone to buy me gifts or presents.

i don't miss it. i watch a few movies, listen to a few songs and spend the day doing whatever i want. free from my pain in the ass family and i don't miss it a bit.

just downscale. stop worrying what people think- who gives a shit. unless you have small children- admit there is no Santa Claus and agree that you don't need money spent to show affection. that's just me, your mileage may vary.

If you're not going to run away or get rid of the holiday altogether there are many things to do to manage the stress.

1) If you need help ASK for it. Cooking a big meal is difficult so ask your guests to bring different dishes to cut down on your workload.

2) Do only what must be done and look hard at that list of musts.

3) Shop online.

4) Go see a pageant or listen to some carols and relax into it.

5) Put a smile on your face. Smiling releases endorphins making you happier and more relaxed.

6) Take your time driving. Just know it's going to take you longer to get somewhere and leave a little early. That way, you're not stressed before you even get where you're going.

Hope that helps.

Merry Christmas!

I don't really get stressed out about Christmas. I enjoy doing what has to be done, but wish I could get a move on with the pressie wrapping!
I wouldn't bother about Christmas so much if we didn't have the children, but we all get together as a family, so that bit's nice anyway, and we see friends who we haven't had chance to meet up with for 6 months or so.
We all muck in, and I don't give a monkeys about the mess. It gets cleaned up when it does.

Last year we decided that there was too much going on Christmas Day to be making a large meal. Everyone was up early because of the kids so we spent the day enjoying their delight and enjoying our own gifts. Christmas dinner was held on Boxing Day. The girls did the cooking with a few of their favourite drinks along the way and dinner was stress free. The kids had settled down and everyone had a chance to sleep in and relax. I believe we'll be doing the same this year.

well, for me a peaceful christmas could only be accomplished by leaving... but then again, i'm used to the chaos and the racket and rather enjoy the kids and cats and dogs rolling around. for a while. then i go hide in my room with earplugs.

also, i had a christmas when i only had smokie for company and after all the crazy ones prior, i did not enjoy that one at all.

to me christmas needs laughter.

We've had pheasant on the table for the last xxx years, so this time we're having a turkey and some beef.

For me, stress reduction at Christmas time is an oxymoron. Christmas Day with family and extended-family and extended-extended-family is chaotic.

But lately my own personal reprieve has been the internet and 'free-shipping' sites. This year I have done 95% of my shopping online.

I think doing most of the prep work early is the key to less stress. I always want the house to look perfect - it's impossible. I always want the tree to look perfect - it's impossible. I need to expect less perfection and drink more! :drunk: :drunk:
