No Offense

Why do people always say "no offense" right before they offend you?

Probably because they know what they're about to say is going to offend you. They're trying to fend off some measure of that offense beforehand...a sort of pre-statement apology.

Of course, what most people may not realize is that that when they use that phrase, it is almost invariably offensive in and of itself. In effect, it is telling that person to "be prepared to be offended, 'cause here it comes!"

They're liars. I also hate it when people try to use "That's crap." as an argument or "I want." as a reason

Or, when someone says: "To be honest ...." and you know they ARE going to be, when maybe you'd rather they weren't .....

"Do you expect me to believe that?" :eek2:

how about "what you're going to do is..."

which instantly produces an "i don't think so!" reflex!

We all tend to say them don't we, but one that immediately bugs me, is when someone says: "Now you might not like me saying this, BUT ..."
And you know they're going to say it, whatever.

"You might not like this, but..."

No, I'm definitely not going to like that!

Oh, and another one!

"If you don't mind me saying so,..."

Oh, but I do! I do mind you saying so!

lol! There you have the problem of using a language which isn't supposed to be direct - you need all these starting seqences to be "allowed" to say things... we don't use half those phrases, rude people that we are :P

Yours sure makes it more simple though Silke. By the look of things, no one over here can even start a conversation without being very careful as to how they word it! : )

How about this one: "I shouldn't really repeat this, but ..."
Or: "You're not supposed to've heard this, but ..."

And although some of these things might irritate us, we've all been there!!
