And yet, in the Tyrol Museum where the mummified body of the 5000 year old "Iceman's" kept, an old leather quiver's amongst his belongings, along with some of his arrows.
[ img ]No one knows what this man was doing on the mountainside on his own, but in antiquity, men probably hunted in groups and got as close to the quarry as possible. The animal thus surrounded, one hunter may not've needed to fire successive arrows rapidly, so it's possible that quivers could've been slung over their shoulders - or carried at the hip. No one really knows how successful these hunts were, although I'm sure that TV and film makers get a lot of detail wrong.
Our old Russian friend describes when his father took him hunting for wild boar in the forests where he grew up. They used wooden spears to kill the creatures, after chasing them through the undergrowth.
Indigenous tribes who still hunt for monkeys, either use long bows or blow pipes, and their quivers ARE slung round their necks.
