I had no idea about the origins of the word and don't recall ever having a need to use it. Reading that article kind of makes me wonder about the master/slave relationship of that era. It's all very interesting.

I, too, never gave the word a thought. Over here, a cakewalk's not so much a dance, but a fairground or amusement attraction where people shuffle along a platform and try not to fall over. The platform's made in sections, which move rapidly back and forth until you hit a "safe" bit again.

    that looks

i'm one of those people who would do well in either of the master/slave rolls. it's so totally against anything I consider human. or what should be.

what I found the most chilling was the analysis of the original festival being on the surface a "free" day slave celebration, yet massa was still in charge. so basically SSDD, but with music.

meanwhile, last year one of squeaki's 8 years old classmates blurted out that things were much better when everybody still had a black slave.

    squeaki was not amused.

Funny how words can come to have different meanings.

What an awful thing for someone to say Vikki, but I assume it was said in innocence. The child in question'd obviously heard something like that before - most likely from an adult. : (

It was an unusual one though. How many kids see or speak of a black person and think "slave"? It also says a lot about squeaki that she wasn't amused, bless her.

yes, she and saxon are sponges alright and it's good when they absorb things like tolerance. not so good when you get nailed with the old "but you said..." and you try to back pedal for dear life!

      ..

LOl - I've been there, so I know exactly what you're talking about. It can be very embarrassing.
