i'm following The Loved Dog method of housebreaking and i really wish i'd known it from the very start because i can clearly see how wrong the traditional method (point the nose at the poop, scold, toss the dog outside) is now.

problem is, he has no problem peeing and pooping in his crate and just lying in it. he doesn't even get up to pee, he just lies there while the puddle spreads around him.

someone told me this is a sign he was kept in a crate for far too long at a time and lost his natural aversion to lying in his wastes and it's impossible to fix this.

please, say it isn't so!

not true. Though you are right about the old methods of housebreaking.

do you have bedding in the cage? if so remove it, that can encourage some dogs to go potty in there. Also I suggest buying the smallest crate possible, that sometimes deters it. So can excersize pens (sometimes called x-pens.

check out canismajor.com for possible housebreaking tips.

thanks!

actually, i think we have a handle on it now: what you said about the size must've been it because i noticed today he's pretty snug in there now. he went five hours yesterday no mess and today two hours no mess. he's also making an effort to poop on the balcony but alas, is still free'n'easy with the pee - honestly, he's like so many guys: just casually "whips it out" and lets fly wherever.

the up side, though, is that ganesh's floor is now a lot cleaner!

I know. One wrong move, and either you or I (or someone else) are all over it.
