I need more info.

is she a puppy under 10 months old?

do her ears flop or stick out/stand up?

what breed is she?

what kind of food is she on?

does she drag her bottom on the floor?

Hello vettechie..

she is 8 months old

her ears flop

she doesn't drag her bum on the floor, not that I've noticed

she is a shi tzu

pedigree or tesco(shop brand) tinned puppy food

it really is a bad smell, I've bathed her more times than she should be bathed but the smell is turning heads!

Ok.

several things could be going on.

1. being under 10 months old, she may still have puppy breath, she may also have a retained puppy tooth that is basically rotting in her mouth. Check for the appearance of double upper and lower canine teeth ( if there is, talk to your vet about removal)

2. canned pedigree is not a good diet. Basically its dog fast food- think of the worst fast food available.... Store brand food is even worse. Canned food is also bad for her teeth, and can cause gum problems too. You should feed her a dry diet if she will eat it or a dry and canned mixture. If you live in the USA I can give you brands, I dont know what food is available in the UK. I am guessing you have purina products or maybe IAMS or science diet over there?

3. Being a shih-tzu, she is prone to ear infections that can cause a foul odor. Also the hair around shih-tzu faces can trap food particals that become rancid and odorous.

4. I asked about dragging her rear end because dogs have 2 glands under thier tails. 1 on either side of the anus that will emit a foul odor if the contents get released.

I suggest a vet visit to rule out an ear infection, and a prompt diet change. Just remember to change a pets food, you must do it slowly over a course of 2-4 weeks or you will get soft stools.

feel free to reply if any more questions pop up!

Thanks so much for the advice. I've booked her to see the vet at 2.40 today. I think it may be her ears. I'll also get on to changing their food. Thanks again.

The visit to the vet went well. She has an ear infection and an upset tummy. He gave her ear drops(Canaural ) and an antibiotic (Synulox). She has to go back on the 2nd March to see about removing some teeth, she seems to have 2 rows of bottom teeth, her milk teeth have not fallen out yet so he may have to extract them.
The 3 of them have taken really well to the dried food. I've got them on Complete Bakers Purina. So far so good.
