We had animal control bring us a HBM (hit by motor home) female Boxer on Friday night that was running around on the freeway. She had no collar but was microchipped, unfortunately the microchip was still registered to the puppy mill in which the owners bought her from and was never updated. :( Animal control told us they could not get a hold of the puppy mill corporation until Monday morning to get more info.

So we stabilized her as best we could (IV fluids, Cefazolin, Mannitol, Buprenex) and flushed and packed her gigantic wounds with wet to dry bandages. Our doctor did not even make an attempt to close it as the femur suffered an open comminuted fracture.

The city animal shelter shelter insisted on taking the dog this morning to their facilities and treating it. I have no idea what happened to the Boxer as they close at 5pm and she did not return back to us for continued care today…

She had a few more wounds but this one was the worst. I must say that this really is one of the worst wounds I have ever seen. The bone that is exposed is the femur.

That is sad, to say the least. I feel sorry for the dog, and the dog's owners. :(

apparently animal control took her to another animal hospital where her leg was amputated, She is doing well, and is actually up and about already. The puppy mill had no records for this dog anymore, and no owner has been found. Since she is a medical patient she can heal for a full 4 weeks before she is placed for adoption, and the shelter she is in, is also a no-kill shelter so she will get a home.

so any update on the boxer's condition? Is he doing okay? Has he found a forever home? I will worry about this baby until I know he's safe and loved.

UPDATE!!!!

The boxer has been adopted- by her foster mom and dad! Her name is now Clara, and she is doing great. The owners have another boxer- Carl.

Isnt that cute- clara and carl??--anyway....

The owner aparently fell in lover with her, and refused to give her back to the shelter- and begged for adoption papers. Apparently the shelter does not advocate that foster families adopt the pets they are caring for (something about limits on the number of animals a foster family can have at one time, and if they adopt- sometimes they can no longer foster), and it took some work, but they did it.

YAY!!!
